Hard to explain and even harder to pronounce, the Danish word ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hooga’) translates roughly to ‘cosiness’. Oxford Dictionaries even shortlisted hygge as one of their Words of the Year 2016 and with no fewer than 9 books recently published on the concept, it seems that Hygge is here to stay.
In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too.
There’s nothing more hygge than sitting round a table, discussing the big and small things in life. Perhaps hygge explains why the Danes are some of the happiest people in the world?
Danish doctors even recommend “tea and hygge” as a cure for the common cold!!
So what exactly is it?
Hygge could be enjoying the simple everyday cup of tea. Wrapping up in a blanket with a friend to watch a movie. Having a beer in a cosy bar. Dimming the lights at home and replacing them with candles or just sitting down to a family meal and savouring it.
Hygge seems especially suited to Ireland as our long, wet winters seem like we were made for Hygge, so stay in bed, grab a blanket and embrace your inner Hygge.
